Squire Sanders Expands Middle East Platform           Date: 2010-06-07

Veteran business lawyer Kevin T. Connor, who helped global law firm Squire, Sanders & Dempsey L.L.P. establish a stronghold in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), has been tapped to lead the firm’s continued growth in Saudi Arabia, Lebanon and other parts of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).

Connor has relocated to Riyadh after 18 years advising CEE companies, foreign investors and governmental entities on a wide range of business and finance transactions.

Now working with Squire Sanders independent network firm El-Khoury & Partners Legal Counsel (EKP), Connor brings key experience and capabilities to a region pursuing substantial restructuring and development projects.

“Saudi Arabia is arguably among the last truly major emerging world markets. It is without question the strongest and most dynamic market in the Middle East and North Africa, and filled with exceptional opportunities for multinational business,” said Squire Sanders Chair James J. Maiwurm. “Kevin’s years of experience guiding clients through emerging market transactions make him the perfect choice to bolster our MENA presence.”

Maiwurm added that Connor has the ideal background to advise clients with business ventures in Saudi Arabia, which has an ambitious modernization program centered on infrastructure, banking and finance, and oil and gas ventures, as well as with ventures in other countries in the MENA region. Connor has extensive experience in privatizations and has been the lead lawyer on financings totaling more than US$1.5 billion, as well as on merger and acquisition, project finance, energy and real estate deals.

EKP Managing Partner Ziad G. El-Khoury, who is also of counsel with Squire Sanders, said Connor’s background significantly bolsters EKP’s regional capabilities
“Over the past five years, EKP and Squire Sanders have expanded the Middle East platform to the point where we now have full-service offices in Riyadh and Beirut with 15 lawyers on the ground teaming with Squire Sanders lawyers from other offices. Together, we provide the necessary legal expertise, sector experience, language capacity and cultural understanding to handle the sophisticated initiatives being undertaken in the Kingdom,” El-Khoury said.

El-Khoury’s relationship with Squire Sanders dates back to 2003, when he and Squire Sanders partner Dale E. Stephenson relocated to Riyadh and developed a strong working relationship with Saudi Arabia lawyer Khulaif Al-Enezee, who heads EKP’s local practice in Saudi Arabia.

“Our clients in the MENA region have benefitted from access to Squire Sanders’ global platform, and the support of another Squire Sanders partner with deep knowledge of the firm resident in Riyadh significantly boosts our capabilities,” El-Khoury said.
